If you are a history enthusiast, then Aegina will surely rank high on your list. You can’t visit the island without seeing the Temple of Aphaia, one of the country’s most historic monuments, dating back to 500 BC. Along with the Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon, they form the sacred triangle of antiquity. It’s also worth visiting the Archaeological site of Kolona, which includes important finds from the Doric Temple of Apollo. The Archaeological Museum is housed there as well. Across the hill of Saint Nectarios lies Paliachora, the “Mystras of Aegina,” a medieval village that was the island’s first capital. Around 365 small churches are still preserved today, and visitors can certainly explore them.

Aegina is famous for its pistachios, which are a Protected Designation of Origin product. They are a key ingredient in many savory and sweet dishes, such as pistachio pâté, garlic dip with Aegina pistachios, and macarons or meringues with pistachio. Apart from that, the island offers local delicacies like kastoyles and fried soup. While Aegina’s cheeses may not be widely known, they are definitely worth trying: geremezi, yogurt cheese, and tsigara. Finally, the island produces Aegina retsina and sun-dried wine for personal use.
